flowers perfume the air.
in joyful song of a bird
resonates truth.
This haiku is a kaibun , a palindrome, in which syllable sequence is identical, whether the poem is read from the beginning as from the end. This form was very popular in Japanese poetry during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
A text says the following about the death of Gozan:
Night They enjoy that died there were still some flowers on the plum tree looked out the window. Occasionally an owl perched in the tree to rest, and sang: "Ho, ho." Gozan said: "My life is over ..." He took his brush and wrote his poem.
died the second day of the third month of 1733, at the age of 38 years.
